“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”
I agree with Aristotle, and maybe some individual said it before him but just didn’t have the papyrus at the ready… Two fold, (1) each choice we make impacts who we are and (2) don’t be intimidated by excellence or the idea of excellence 🙂
It sums up living mindfully and how to cultivate green practices, one moment at a time, one step at a time, one day at a time – creating habits that are promoting healthy and environmentally conscious living. That means taking an inventory of all the seemingly throw-away habits throughout our day. They are decisions we make, even when they are automatic, that impact the world around us. So becoming aware of those habits and changing them to be more mindful of our environment creates our excellence. It is not one great action, but showing up every day, that makes a change.
Living an eco-friendly and healthy life many seem like a new years resolution with that first valiant visit to the gym and work out… and then what? what happens next? what’s the next choice you make? For instance, we may not all be able to afford solar paneling on our homes at this minute, or we may live in an apartment where you don’t have immediate control of the energy source. This can be discouraging, intimidating. But the knowledge that excellence in anything is a habit brings the power back to you, to me, to the individual. That means it’s okay to create habits through baby steps so that your body gets used to it. Like in yoga – don’t try and become a pretzel before the dough has been adequately kneaded. Find the pose everyday, and over time, days, months and years, the habit, the practice of the pose will bring you closer to a pretzel, or beyond it (because turning into a human pretzel isn’t the point of yoga.) I mean, we don’t need to look at some huge end result and think we’re not enough if you don’t have x, y, or z… know that your wonder, excellence, generosity is comprised of all the little things that you say, do, and think. So trust that your excellence is there. You’re like a fish in water – you live in your excellence so you don’t realize it’s all around you at all times…
So don’t get discouraged if you don’t see the results in an hour or a day. Just keep on truckin’, or keep on cyclin’ – less of carbon footprint
Getting in the habit of bringing reusable bags to the grocery store, reducing plastic consumption, not buying or consuming single-use water bottles, turning off the water while you brush your teeth, all of these little habits create excellence over the long-term.
